What Causes Depression And Excess Sleep Caused Due To An Head Injury?
Hi my dad fell 3 weeks ago and hit his head pretty badly the hospital did a head scan to rule out that he had a stroke. He seems to be failing rapidly. He is depressed. he has dementia but his whole personality has changed. He is sleeping alot. I am going to take back to the hospital to have another scan on his brain because something just isnt right. any suggestions.
Excessive sleep after a head injury may be indicative of post concussion syndrome. You are advised to get a repeat X-ray, CT, MRI done to rule out any broken bone, skull fracture, bleeding inside the skull or brain, or a mid-line shift of the brain that may require urgent medical treatment and management.
Get him clinically examined, he may require neurological examination. The treating doctor may do sensory and motor examinations as well. His treatment will depend on the pathology causing the symptoms is detected. Treatment will depend on the symptoms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
