What Causes Depression In A 89 Year Old?

My 89 year old mother is being put on hospice. She has nothing wrong so to speak with her. She is just tired of living. Her quality is gone. She is grieving over her husband's death six months ago. She has lost weight and isn't interested in eating. She is verbally and emotionally abusive to her daughter now. She refuses physical therapy and blames everyone for her sad life. How long can this continue?

Welcome to HCM
Hello, the cause of your mothers behavior is depression due to the loss of her husband it is difficult for some people to get over the loss,it is her way of grieving ,you have to consult a psychiatrist who will give her continuous counselling and some medication which will make her to come to terms with her condition, with counselling and treatment she will be her old self faster
You can
1.Encourage her to eat small frequent meals
2.Loving attitude towards her
3.Lots of fluids
4. Moderate exercise/walking
5.Involving her in daily activities
Thank you
