General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
A diabetic coma is a life-threatening diabetes complication that causes unconsciousness. It occurs when blood sugar gets too high and the body becomes severely dehydrated. It is a medical emergency.
Dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can lead to a diabetic coma.
Uncontrolled diabetes can progress to metabolic derangement namely Diabetic ketoacidosis, Diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome and Hypoglycemia, which can result in decreased nutrient supply of the brain limiting the vital functions resulting in coma.
Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus persons are at more risk of developing diabetic coma caused mainly by: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and/or Diabetic ketoacidosis.
Treatment depends on the cause for the development of coma by correcting the underlying metabolic derangement.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
