What Causes Diarrhea Along With Excessive Sleepiness And Slurred Speech?

Hi, my sister is 75 years old. She had severe diarrhea last night. She got absolutely no sleep through the night. Today she is EXTREMELY sleepy and has slurred speech. She is so tired she has trouble remembering how to order a coffee drink she get a couple times a week. I just called her and she sounds no better. She has a small dog who has to go outside to do his business so she has tried to sleep on and off during the day but has been awaken by her dog to go out. She has had bladder infections before and acted strangely. Is it possible she could have a bladder infection. Thank you so much for your input

Hello,

I think your sister needs immediate medical attention for following 2 main reasons:
- Severe diarrhea has caused loss of fluids and electrolytes
- Loss of fluids might have caused severe dehydration which might alter her neurological status.

So, immediate neurological examination should be run and intravenous fluid replacement should be undergone. Meanwhile, give her plenty of fluids, especially water with oral re-hydration salts. Give Tasectan or Peptobismol to stop diarrhea, and pro-biotics to stabilize the intestinal flora. Diarrhea has not caused by her UTI but might be related to antibiotics she might have used to treat UTI or due to consuming bad food.
