What Causes Diarrhea And Abdominal Pain While Suffering From IBS?

Several years ago my wife was diagnosed as having IBS. Recently, her symptoms have gotten much worse. She will have diarrhea several times a week, even after having normal BMs several times earlier. She wakes every morning with severe pain in her lower abdomen ( below her belly button) which may last for several hours or sometimes all day. The BM problem has her reluctant to go out because when the cramps begin does not always make it to a toilet on time. Her doctor recommended Lyrica which helped for about a week but is not helping any more. She is convinced that there is something wrong beside IBS.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is unlikely that your wife is suffering from any added disease besides IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome).

IBS has this characteristic waxing and waning course, where there will be a period of Diarrhea followed by a normal or even constipated interval. Ask your doc for other options.

There are a wide variety of drugs that help with Diarrhea predominant symptoms, all from different classes of drugs.

As a result, she should respond well to few drugs, but they all need to be taken under monitoring to ensure the side effects are not major. Hence, ask your clinician about the same.
