Thank you. Our 22 year old daughter has had quite a few health issues over the years so I ll try to be concise. She has Hashimotos thyroid disease, and is on thyroxine for this. In the past 6-7 months she has lost about 20 pounds and has been having terrible diarrhea after eating small meals, starting first thing in the morning and lasting throughout the day, after every meal. She has had bad nausea for the past few weeks which has caused her to not be able to function much at all. She is a senior in her last quarter of college so this all has happened at a critical time for her. She has been to a gastroenterologist and he ordered a colonoscopy and endoscopy, then a MR enterography. The results were inconclusive and he said the inflammation found in the biopsies weren t enough to cause the weight loss. She had a special test done for inflammatory markers, sent out to a lab. It showed a very high level of inflamatory process in her stools. She is IGA deficient which we learned about several years ago at Children s Hospital. The doctor prescribed a steroid but clearly said she doesn t have Crohn s or IBD. She opted not to take the steroid as she thought if she didn t have either problem why would he prescribe that. Also, the endoscopy didn t show sprue, so that seemed to rule out Celiac disease. I have been looking online for any reason she may have this happening to her. It s very hard watching your loved one in such bad shape and continuing to hear it isn t a GI problem. Meanwhile, she seems to be getting worse, losing weight and having to lie down when she s home and able to. I would be grateful for any direction you can give me about what to do next and what you may think is going on? Thank you for your help.
