Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
Abdominal pain and diarrhea are typical of a bowel infection which most of the times it is viral infection and it is self limiting, which means it takes several days and goes on it's own. Generally the only recommended treatment in these cases is hydration with oral rehydration solutions and sometimes we can give some probiotics. Antibiotics are not going to help in viral gastroenteritis.
What I would suggest is:
1. If your wife does not have blood with stools or mucus with stools than it is likely the infection is viral so she needs just supportive treatment,
2. plenty to drink- frequent small amount of water, liquids and oral rehydration solutions.
3. rest
4. hygiene- washing her hands with warm water and soap regularly an not touching the food of others it is not transmitted to others in the family
5. paracetamol is a great idea, it is safe in pregnancy and can help with pain.
6. I would not give nifuroxazide at the moment as it is an antibiotic and is not going to help with viral infections. Even when bacterial infection is the diagnosis again antibiotics are rarely used but supportive treatment.
7 If she does not improve in 3-4 days or has blood or mucus with the diarrhea than she will need to see a doctor and get the proper medical attention.
Hope this is helpful to you and answers to your question

Best regards,

Dr Antoneta
