What Causes Diarrhea And Stomach Pain And Does It Require Medical Attention?

I have been having intense pain in my stomach for hours now which also radiates thru my back. It comes on quickly, lasts for only a few seconds, and then subsides. Also I have been having lots of diareaha (sp?). I am 33, I weigh about 155lbs and I stand about five foot four. Is it just the rare stomach flu or something more serious? My husband suggested going to see our doctor, but she is more than a hour away and I know I cannot travel comfortably due to the diareaha (sp?). Is it anything to worry about or is it just better to ride it out at home?

Hi,

I noted the history of having intense pain in stomach, radiates through back, comes on quickly lasts only for few seconds, to get subsided. Also have lots of diarrhea not allowing to see the GP an hour away, also noted other findings. As per the history you have provided, this looks to be stomach flu associated with some nerve root affection like may be developing Herpes Zoster or nerve root compression since such a pain as you have described is not seen in cases of diarrhea. it is usually a twisting pain.

I would advise you the following:

- Take Imodium stat and after every motion - maximum 6 capsules in 24 hours so that the diarrhea will stop and you will be in a position to attend the doctor.

Send the samples of stool and blood to get the reports as early as possible so that further management can be started soon. This can be in the form of an antibiotic active against intestinal infection, PPI like Omeprazole, activated charcoal, probiotics, and painkillers as you have pain too. Clinical evaluation and examination to decide the cause of pains and diarrhea and add on proper management like rehydration, electrolyte supplements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
