What Causes Diarrhea And Vomiting When Diagnosed With Clostridium Difficile Infection?

My 31 year old daughter-in- law was diagnosed with c diff colitis. She has completed a course of antibiotics but is still has diarrhea and vomiting most mornings. It takes most of the day for her to start to feel better and then it starts over the next day. She is not pregnant. She has lost 20 pounds. She has been to several doctors and doesn t know what to do from here. This all began around the time they got a new puppy. Even though they tested a stool sample could she have a parasite from the puppy?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

C. difficile infection is usually caused by prolonged use of antibiotics.

I suggest doing another stool test after the antibiotics.

If the infection from C. difficile continues I suggest taking a second cycle of antibiotics.

I also suggest daily probiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
