Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I m trying to determine the cause of a negative gastrointestinal response when eating shrimp. My physician had a seafood panel tested during my last blood work and it was negative for a shrimp allergy. However, when I eat shrimp it results in diarrhea within 30 minutes, around 80% of the time. I ve stopped eating shrimp, but I m hoping there is an underlying cause that might correct the issue.
Diarrhea after the intake of any food can indicate food poisoning or gastroenteritis. Your symptoms will subside with few episodes of diarrhea after all the gastric contents are expelled. I would recommend you to increase fluid intake in the form of water and oral rehydration solution. Antibiotics may be required in case of suspected infections.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
