What Causes Difficulty In Breathing Along With Abdominal Bloating?

I am having difficulty in breathing. It is difficult to take a deep breath and I cannot complete a yawn. When I lay down to sleep, I feel like I have stopped breathing. I have extreme pressure, similar to bloating in the stomach area. I have been diagnosed with gerd and acid stomach reflex. Have had this on and off for a couple weeks, this being the worse tonight. I am curious to what can be causing this, plan on making Doctor appointment tomorrow. Any ideas?

Hello,

There are many possible causes of abdominal bloating and shortness of breath. It is more common in people who experience functioning gastrointestinal disorder like GERD, irritable bowel syndrome or gastroparesis and many other causes. Bloating can be due to buildup of gas, fluids, or food in the stomach that increase gas.

Most abdominal bloating should resolve itself with time when excess gases, liquids or food can move through the stomach and intestine. However, if your abdominal bloating and shortness of breath last longer than a day, seek medical attention from your home doctor.

Your history and symptoms are more concern to me. Difficulty breathing is one of the more frightening symptoms of acid reflux (GERD). GERD can cause bronchospasm and aspiration. These difficulties can sometimes lead to life-threatening respiratory complications. Because stomach acid that creeps into the esophagus can enter the lungs, particularly during sleep, and cause swelling the airways. This can lead to asthma reaction or cause aspiration pneumonia.

To help GERD symptoms: Lifestyle changes such as eat smaller, more frequent meals, and avoid bedtime snack or meals, lose weight, avoid acid food like sour food, quit smoking or drinking alcohol, elevate the head of your bed by 4 to 8 inches, no pressure on your abdomen.

If your lifestyle change not help you can try medicine such as antacids, H2 receptor blockers, and PPI. Discuss with your doctor before using the medicine. If you stay shortness of breath and coughing or wheezing hearing sound from your breathing, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
