Though many times palpitation is not of any serious cause. However, palpitation which causes difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath, or fainting should always be properly investigated to rule put cardiac rhythm problem (arrhythmias).
The ECG may be normal at a time when palpitation settles down. I would advise he should have an appointment with a cardiologist if he has more episodes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
