What Causes Difficulty In Breathing While Falling Asleep?

I know this sounds daft but at night when i am at the brink of falling asleep i seem to forget to breathe. It isn't an obstruction, it feels as though my brain is no longer automaticly telling me to breathe anymore and i awake suddenly and out of breath. Once i have fallen alseep this problem doesn't seem to bother me and i get a full generally uninterupted nights sleep. It only occures during the transition of being awake to falling asleep. I wondered if this could be a form of sleep apnea, however i am not overweight, i am only 19 years old and am not a typical candidate for this disease, any ideas?
