Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a lung transplant patient for five years. I, of course, have to take 5mg of prednisone, anti-rejection drug, plus antibiotics every day. I am a strict Vegan and maintain a strict diet of beans, brown rice, quinoa. fruits and vegetables. I never have pasta, deserts or soft drinks. However, I have a very hard time losing weight. Any suggestions?
Hello there, thank you for your question, I would start by saying you are on a medication protocol which has as major side effect water retention and weight gain, this is due to the presence of Prednisone in your treatment. However Prednisone is very necessary and an essential part of your treatment as it prevent the body from considering the new lung as foreign and hence mounting an immune response against it. I would advise you seek medical attention from your physician and also consult a dietician. First I would advise you reduce on the quantity of food you take in and avoid eating after six pm, exercise regularly. Good luck. Dr Asanghanwa
