What Causes Difficulty In Moving Thumb After A Hand Fracture?

I sprained my right hand in a fall on the ice a month ago. I had an xray and there was no apparent break. It was slowly getting better. In trying to use a pair of heavier scissors, I felt some pain and after that I haven't been able to move my thumb. Any ideas?

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
** It seems that you have suffered a sprain of the thmb during the use of heavier scissors, . Such minor sprains usually take 7-10 days to resolve.

1. Give enough rest to your hand and thub muscle. Avoid workouts and lifting weights with the hand till acute pain subsides completely.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help. You can consult your orthopedician for prescriptions.
4. Hot compresses to your arm will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
This should slowly subside with hot fomentation and proper relaxation.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
