What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing Food?

I have trouble swallowing the first bite of a meal. It seems to take about 10 minutes for that first bite to travel through my system to my stomach and then I can eat. It is especially evident with bread. can you suggest what I can read up on to see if I candetermine what is causing this to happen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
What problem you are facing for difficulty in swallowing needs to be investigated. The cause could be due to lesion present within the food pipe or due to narrowing of food pipe lumen due to compression from outside.
It would be advisable for you to undergo following investigations to look for the cause:
1. Upper GI endoscopy.
2. X-ray of the neck and chest.
Depending on the findings, you may also require CT scan of the neck and chest. Kindly consult Physician with the report for evaluation and further advise.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
