Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the last couple of weeks I have been having trouble swallowing food unless I really take my time to take very small bites and chew completely. It takes me about twice as long as an average person to do this. If I don t eat this way, I get a painful feeling lump in my esophogus that will last for 30 - 40 minutes until the food is fully swallowed. If I allow myself to vomit, the food will be expunged along with a very thick mucous fluid. I then feel better and can eat again. Some people say I should have my esophogus stretched. I m a 70 year old male in fairly good health besides this problem. Should I be overly concerned?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Difficulty in swallowing at this age is a concern and needs to be addressed.
There are many causes for dysphagia means difficulty in swallowing. But at your age, malignancy has to be ruled out.
It might be a malignant stricture that causes difficulty in swallowing.
So, my suggestion is please consult general surgeon and have endoscopy. If the endoscopy report is normal, we have to think about other causes like neurogenic.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Siddartha
