Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing With Chronic Lethargy And Dizziness?
My 14 year old son has had trouble swallowing for the past 3 months, he has had a barrium swallow and blood tests as well as x-rays. The hospital doctors think he may have Eosinophilic oesophagitis and we are now waiting for more tests. He has now become very lethargic and getting dizzy. All the doctors are closed at the moment and won t be open for a couple of days, should I wait until Monday or should I take him to the emergency department. He did have very high blood pressure a few weeks ago of 162/120. I am about to pick him up from his part time job so I don t know how his bp is
It is very rare for a 14 year old boy to have difficulty in swallowing. Hence, it needs detailed investigations in additional to the ones that are done. Esophageal manometry. Real-time barium swallow to see for any serrated appearance. CT scan of chest. CT scan of breast and neurological evaluation to see for any neurological involvement of vagus nerve. Any bad habits that can cause esophago-spasm. Difficulty in swallowing will cause lethargy as he may not be eating and drinking enough due to fear. Yes, it is better to take him to ER for clinical evaluation, emergency investigations and symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
