What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing?

Yes. Hi! I had a bad cold with cough for two weeks during the holiday. Luckily I was off work. Well, I went back to work last Monday. I felt like I was getting better each day until friday. Everything hurt..I felt like I was hit by a truck. My throat is on fire and I ve tried many things. I have a temp of 101.8, that I just took. I have thick saliva, but no color. My stomach is rumbling, but that s probably cuz I can t eat. I ve been drinking water, but it hurts so bad to swallow.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank your for using HCM for your health questions!

It seems to me that you are suffering from tonsillitis, that is the infection of the tonsils. Probably it is bacterial tonsillitis, caused by streptococcus, etc. It can be also caused by viruses.
It is possible that the infection has progressed and your tonsils have become purulent, with pus developing on them, visible by naked eye. In these cases tonsils become very painful and it is very painful to even open your mouth or swallow own saliva, not talking about drinking water or eating anything!
The high fever and incubation period supports this diagnosis.
In this case you need to be treated urgently by antibiotics, by going to your family physician. If there is pus on your tonsils then you might need to take an intro-venous (i.v) antibiotic such as zinnat (cefuroxime) or other antibiotics that will by suggested by your doctor.
Please hurry up to be treated because if the pus escalates into abscess then you will need to remove your tonsils.
I hope that my answer will help you and I wish you fast recovery!
