General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having weakness in your legs. There are many causes of muscle weakness, including nerve and muscle problems. Also, sometimes we feel weak because systemic disorders from the heart, anemia, infection, depression, or electrolyte abnormalities.

If I were to see you in my clinic, I would get a full history of your past medical problems and medications. My physical exam would focus on muscle strength and tone, and finally I would check your blood for electrolytes, complete blood count, urine test, tests for autoimmune disease.

Hopefully that would give some clues as to what is causing the weakness. From there I might consider an EMG and nerve conduction studies if I suspected a nerve or muscle problem. As you can see, the work up for your weakness may be extensive in order to find the cause.

I recommend you see your doctor so that he or she can begin investigating what the cause is in your particular case and can hopefully start treating you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
