What Causes Discharge From Nipple?

I am 61 years old this morning woke up to a small leakage from my left nipple. It was just a few drops should I worry or is this normal at my age? I have not had a mammogram in over 5 years because the doctor I had focus on my weight rather than my examine so I just left and did not look for a better dr. What could this leakage mean? Thank You Mrs. Allen

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear welcome to hcm and thanks for choosing us.

I share your concerns about nipple discharge. There are following possibilities for nipple discharge in this age group
1 infections (but you should have fever in infections)
2 hormonal disturbances (like menopause or any ovary disease)
3 breast cancer
4 ovarian disease

Firstly do a breast self examination to find any lump in your breast, then do the rest.

In my opinion you should visit your doctor again and request for a mammogram as cancer is most serious problem, need to be ruled out as soon as possible.

Rest of the steps can be decided after mammography report. You may require microscopic examination of your nipple discharge. Ultrasound scan of pelvic region to look for ovaries. A hormone analysis. You need to visit surgeon, gynaecologist and endocrinologist to come to a final diagnosis.

I hope my reply will benefit you. Please write to us for more questions. I wish you good health. Kindly rate this reply. Thanks
