What Causes Discoloration And Foul Smell From An Wound Post Covering?
My son smashed his finger under the front door. I put cold water and ice on it immediately. Last night I put anti biotic ointment on it then applied band aid. This morning when I cleaned it his finger had turned white and has a awful smell. Is this normal? Could I have put band aid on too tight even though I took extra care trying not to?
The foul smell from cut wound indicates usually bacterial infection with Staph aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A microbiologic culture of the swab test in the lab is best recommended. Till the culture report is available, sterile dressing, empiric antibiotics as that of Penicillin or Cephalosporin group help to recover faster.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
