What Causes Discoloured And Brittle Nails Along With Yellow Patches?

Hi, My toenails have discoloured from dull to bluish black, warped and thick. The big toenails appeared split and with yellowish patches at the edge. The skin around the nails are very dry and whitish and sometimes cracked. Is this just fungal infection or athelete foot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

One common possibility is a fungal infection, such as toenail fungus or athlete's foot. Fungal infections can cause changes in nail color, texture, and thickness, as well as dry and cracked skin around the nails.

There are other kinds of health conditions that could cause such similar symptoms. For instance, psoriasis, a chronic skin condition, can affect the nails and lead to discoloration, thickening, and pitting. Other potential causes include trauma or injury to the nails, systemic diseases like diabetes, and certain medications.

Remember to seek medical advice from a dermatologist or podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment which may include antifungal medications, topical creams, or other interventions.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. If you require a personalized response, kindly use the Ask A Doctor service and post a follow-up query.
