What Causes Discomfort And Difficulty In Breathing With Panic Attacks?

I m a 42 year-old male, extremely obese (400+ lbs.). For the past 12 years I ve had an intermittent problem with breathing difficulty. I can breathe enough air but my chest feels a bit heavy and I will only occasionally be able to fill my lungs to capacity. Belching will sometimes appear to relieve the pressure and allow a deep breath, but it s only a brief respite. I know I m getting enough oxygen and I m in no danger, but not being able to breathe deeply causes a lot of distress and has brought on panic attacks...Does this sound like anything in particular? Could it simply be anxiety?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your difficulty with breathing is very likely due to your obesity as breathing is dependent on pressure balance between inside and outsides of your long.

In an obese person, there is increased chest wall pressure (outside).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
