What Causes Discomfort And Pain In Knee After A Long Walk?
Hello, I did a 6 summit 38 mile hill walk yesterday and during the walk after about 25 miles started to feel slight discomfort at the back of both knees. To be exact vIrtually right at the top of my calf and at the lower hamstring area. As I walked further the discomfort became more intense and by the end of the walk quite painful. This morning the pain has eased but I am in discomfort when stretching my legs. I haven t experience problems of this type before. Can you diagnose my situation and advise appropriate medication. Thanks Kev Williams
Any unaccustomed activity or strenuous activity can trigger inflammation of the joint and the muscles responsible. I suggest you to take over the counter pain relief medications like paracetamol or Ibuprofen. The pain relief medication will not just give symptomatic relief; but also helps to settle down the inflammation.
In addition, you can use hot packs over the effected area as and when needed. Keep your activity levels moderate till the pain settles. Consider seeing a physiotherapist if pain does not subside after 5 days of following the above mentioned steps.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
