What Causes Discomfort In Chest?

I swallowed a large piece of meat about 6-7 hours ago and have had a very uncomfortable feeling in my chest since then. I have since had soup and a scrambled egg. The uncomfortable feeling was worse after eating. Increased belching also. Is this something that will subside? Can you injure your esophagus and that be what I am feeling or is it the actual piece of food still stuck there? Thank you for your time.

Hi,

If food and fluids are passing down quickly as usual (albeit some discomfort) with no vomiting, something stuck there in unlikely.

The discomfort might be from stretching/superficial ulceration of esophageal mucosa. If I were your doctor, I would have given pantoprazol 40 mg once daily and an antacid syrup like gelusil 10ml TID for 5 days. This will help the lesion to heal. Paracetamol will relieve pain if any. I will investigate further with endoscopy only if symptoms are not getting down in 3 days with above measures. Your doctor will guide you.

Meanwhile avoid hot drinks and spicy items for 1 week.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
