Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Discomfort In The Hand When Using A Computer?
I use a computer regularly at work (I also use my hands in off hours to knit), and am starting to feel some mild discomfort on top of my left hand. Are there exercises or other things to do to relieve this before it gets worse? I am a 63 year old female.
This is very common to get pain in hands who use a computer regularly over a long period of time. I would suggest you to keep the computer at a proper distance while using so that you can keep the keyboard at a comfortable height and distance while using.
Do not keep your hands in the same position like while typing or using the computer mouse for long period. Make sure you take small breaks and give rest to your hands for some time. There are exercises like stretching your fingers and hands a little bit, rotation of wrists, abduction, adduction of elbow joints gives some relief.
If this won’t give much relief from the pain, sometimes muscle spasm causes pain which improves on taking muscle relaxants that you should take with your doctor’s suggestion.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
