What Causes Discomfort In The Throat And Swelling In The Feet?

My cousin has something in her throat that she says it feels like a flap. she was prescribed a mouthwash to hopefully make it go away and it did not. And now her feet have started to swell. She is 50 years old in relatively good health. He family physician has made her appointment with an ENT. Should we be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

Your cousin may have throat infection. If it is because of streptococcus bacteria it can be related to joint swelling because the toxins of this bacteria may cause arthritis.

Another thing to mention is your cousin's age. She is 50 and women close to menopause stage may have ankle and muscle troubles.

Her throat discomfort can be due to irritant foods, lacerations or she may have tonsil stones which are rare but they do happen.

Until she will see her ENT specialist, advise to keep good oral hygiene. Gargle with warm water and salt and take oral antiseptic lozenges.

Complete blood count, urine analysis and arthritis tests (antistreptolysins, ASLO, CRP) are also advised to run to determine the cause of swollen feet.

It's common for strep throat to be associated with arthritis.

Hope this will be of help.
