What Causes Discomfort In The Upper Abdomen While Suffering From Hernia?
My mom is 90 and is having a lot of discomfort in her upper abdominal area. She has a hiadel hernia. She is feeling nauseated. She took some baby aspirin because she was worried about her heart. I gave her a Pepcid as well. If it is her heart, what symptoms should I be watching for?
Hi Thanks for posting on HCM Upper chest discomfort while suffering from hiatal hernia is normal and may at times be mistaken for heart problems.Heart problems may present with cough, breathlessness, lower limbs swelling, palpitation and others. I feel her problem may be caused by her underlying hiatal hernia. You will however have to see the Doctor for confirmation since only a medical examination may eliminate heart and respiratory causes of such symptoms. In the meantime, i will advise the following: -Continue with pepcid -An antacid like maalox -Eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals. -Avoid foods that trigger heartburn, such as chocolate, onions, spicy foods, citrus fruits and tomato-based foods. -Avoid alcohol. -Eat at least two to three hours before bedtime. -Lose weight if overweight or obese. -Avoid smoking. -Elevate the head of her bed Hope this will help Wish you mom good health
