What Causes Discomfort In Throat After Inhaling Tile Cleaner Fumes?
Hi I am nearly 18 weeks pregnant and and down this morning to my husband using tile and grout cleaner on the kitchen tiles! The smell was very strong and felt it stuck to my throat! Was exposed to it for about 10 minutes! Should I worry about my baby?
Hello and welcome to HCM, The discomfort felt in the throat is due to irritation caused by the fumes. When chemical fumes comes in contact with mucosa of nose and throat, the mucosa turns red and inflamed, The inflammation lasts till the time the mucosa is exposed to the fumes. The exposure to the fumes should be stopped to allow the mucosa to recover. If the inflammation and swelling are severe, immediate medical help should be sought. The exposure is unlikely to affect your baby since the fumes have affected the mucosa and there is no significant blood absorption till this time. So, do not worry.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
