Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have sleep issues. No problem falling asleep. Sleep anywhere from 3-6 hours them wake up from dreams usually. Sometimes I take 1/2 ambien during the night so I can go back to sleep. I don t like doing that and I was wondering about using melatonin instead. I get up early and work long days so I can t afford to take a lot of time to fall back asleep.
Ah, well, that's the issue. Not following a standard day and night cycle is the most common cause of disturbed sleep. There isn't a great treatment for that. But one can try to have as normal a pattern as possible: going to bed and waking at set times all week, using bed only for sleep, having the room cool, lowring noise and light. Melatonin in theory can help reset the biological clock. Do not be in bed if not tired, it sets up bad associations.
