Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i have one tonsil bigger than the other for quite some time.. no other symtpoms. i get tonsilitis once every 2 years.. have bad allergies.. no swollen glands or sore throat or anything like that. Could it just be a result of tonsilitis scarring and is just staying that size?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Generaaly, when you have tonsils infected, both the tonsils will increase in size. But sometimes, there is a disproportionate increase of only one of the tonsils. This should not cause much of worry as tonsils are lymphoid organs providing immunity to the throat and nasopharynx region. In case it is infected and increases in size causing symptoms like obstruction to airways or difficulty in swallowing, you need to get treated with a course of antibiotics and nasal decongestant medications. Salt water gargling with warm water would also help in decreasing the swelling. Repeated and frequent infection might require its removal by means of 'tonsillectomy'. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
