What Causes Distorted Hearing Along With Motor Imbalance?

When listening or playing the piano, the music sounds distorted and the notes appear flat in my hearing. Vocal sounds seem to be as though they are under water. I feel slightly off balance but not dizzy. I have made 2 visits to a noted ENT group in my area and have been seen by 2 specialists. My tests conclude that the left ear remains deaf since 1996 - from no know cause and the hearing in the right ear is good. The physician recommended that I see a neurologist. What can cause these new symptoms?

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The symptoms you describe could be caused by a number of medical conditions. However, in many cases of distorted hearing, the exact cause is never known. Some common causes may include:
-Inner ear cells damage
-Age related hearing loss
-Exposure to noise
-Ear wax blockage
-Ear bone changes
-Meniere's disease
-Temporomandibular joint problems
-Head/neck injury
-Acoustic neuroma
-Blood vessel/BP disorders like: Atherosclerosis, High BP, Turbulent blood flow, capillary malformations,
-Some medications
With all these possible causes, only a keen examination by your Doctor or ENT may help identify the cause. Some tests that may help in the diagnosis may include: Hearing(audiological) exam/sound tests, Imaging test like CT scan or MRI.
Your ENT will be in the best place to investigate the cause. He might only have the exact cause after many attempts at diagnosis or after many tests given the challenges with hearing problems of this type.
Seeing a neurologist is a good idea. However, the opinions of both specialists that is, ENT and neurologist will be very important here.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
