Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 63 year old white male in good health. I went to my doctor with sevier pain on my left side and he immediately diagnosed me with diverticulitus. No hands on, no test or x-ray or ultrasound. He said to avoid eating seeds, nuts and fruits and vegitables with skin. He also said to take Miralax daily to avoid constipation. I have followed thse directions and do feel better. Since that doctor visit, i have researchd Diverticulas on line and the items listed above seem to be old ideas . I am told by lay people that it is a virus and no change in diet is necessary. What is the real story and is there anything to do to make sure the pain doesnt come back?
Since you are 63 years old it is important to get an exact diagnosis so that further complications can be avoided, specific treatment be carried out. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult your Doctor again and get a reference for a Gastroenterologist. Blood and stool tests. CT scan of the abdomen to see for Diverticulitis, cancer, ulcers and so on and if suspected then colonoscopy for diagnosis and biopsy for confirmation is the rule. Once the diagnosis is done then it is possible to have a proper management. Please get these as soon as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
