What Causes Dizziness Along With Vomiting In A Diabetic Person?

Friday afternoon, my Dad felt dizzy and threw up continuously and felt tired and almost losing conscious. The doctors did all the tests in the ER and said all results were normal, not sure why he threw up so much but his sugars are high and he is diabetic. They put him on metformin. He is fine for 2 days taking metformin and metoprolol and from monday he started feeling nauseus and everytime he is walking he is dizzy and having unbalanced gait due to dizziness. Is it because of meds or could it be something else? How long can the dizziness and nausea be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your dad has a history of high blood pressure & high blood sugar. Dizziness with vomiting can be due to anxiety, dehydration, low blood sugar, blood pressure(low or high) or inner ear issues causing vertigo (dizziness).

Help your dad stay well hydrated (sodium & potassium level should be maintained), monitor blood pressure & blood sugar levels to help him stay stable.

Get him physically examined in the ER. He will have to get some blood workouts done along with liver function tests to rule out any liver dysfunction.

He will have to go through audiometry examination. If he is diagnosed with vertigo he will be treated accordingly. He needs to stay in rest.

Give him homemade boiled food that is easily digestible. You can give him anti-emetics.

His treatment will depend upon the severity of the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
