What Causes Dizziness And Cognitive Impairments In An Elderly Woman?

My elderly mother has been experiencing cognitive impairments (i.e. Dizziness, forgetful, repeats information, etc). She is also unsteady on her feet and noticing some difficulty with fine motor skills (i.e. Putting a key in a locker). She went to the ER about two weeks ago and they did some blood work, and an ultrasound of her leg because she was having leg pain and they suspected a clot which was negative. She saw her doctor this past Thursday and he was thinking stress related but did not do any further lab work or order tests. My mother is not very good at describing her symptoms so I doubt that these other symptoms were addressed. Did ask her to have him check her ears but do not know if that was done. She will see her eye doctor in the next two weeks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Dizziness & cognitive impairment in elderly is commonly due to Vertigo. Other medical conditions that cause similar symptoms are sensory deficits, impaired visual acuity, polyneuropathy, generalized weakness, etc.

You are suggested to get your mother a complete medical check up. Get blood & imaging tests done.

She may be referred to an ENT for clinical examination to detect vertigo. She will have to go through Audiomety tests, nerve conduction tests & CT, MRI, EEG, etc. Her treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
