Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Dizziness And Fainting After Tattooing?
I switch tattoo artist about two weeks after my tattoo we went on vacation to California. My husband and I went shopping and I felt really hot and dizzy and passed out. Dr stated I had a seizure. Can switching artists and the different ink he used caused a chemical reaction in my body making me have a seizure?
The answer to your question is: It cannot be excluded.
The truth is that tattoo inks nowadays could contain a wide range of heavy metals, used to retain the ink in the skin. On the other hand, hundreds of colorants and additives are used to prepare tattoo ink as well.
Such metals might include iron, lead, arsenic, mercury, antimony, cadmium, nickel, chromium, etcetera. Among these, most commonly associated with triggering seizures are mercury and lead.
Coming back to your case, I would say that there is a slight possibility that your seizure has been due to the new tattoo ink. However, the chances are low and moreover, scientific research has not come into any definitive conclusion about tattoo safety.
One reason is because information about pigments used in tattoo industry is a trade secret and producers are not obliged to share that information. This hinders scientific research and dealys having clear answers for such questions.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ervin Toçi
