What Causes Dizziness And Numbness In The Fingers?

My boyfriend is 58 years old and has been experiencing dizzy spells several times throughout the day for the past 10 days. Yesterday his fingers started getting numb. He had an MRI done last Friday but his Dr. is out and he does not have the results back yet. I am very worried that it is serious. He drinks and is a smoker. The dizziness is so bad when it hits him that he has to lay back down or hold on to a wall. Should he go to the ER? He is also on blood pressure and cholesterol medicine. He has been taking those meds for a while and this just suddenly started last Sunday.
