What Causes Dizziness And Palpitations While On An Artificial Heart Valve?

Yes, thank you! I am a 59 year old female. I have an artificial heart valve (because I have a bicuspid aortic heart valve) that I received 6 years ago. I just had an echo and it came out fine (last month). I started yoga classes and during the class (with some strenuous moves) I felt my heart beating in my stomach and it felt like I could feel my blood flow too. I was also dizzy but I have found I usually am, if I am moving my head/body side to side. Just worried about going tomorrow and if this is a sign of an abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. Thank you! General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A prosthetic heart valve does not usually cause palpitations. What you are experiencing could be due to a number of reasons ranging from the pre-existing condition that you had, or just anxiety.

The dizziness too could be unrelated. Dizziness, when you move your head, could be due to a condition called BPPV, which stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Here, there are small stones that have formed in your ear canal causing this dizziness. You may visit an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist for the same.

There is a simple postural maneuver that could be performed to fix this. Your symptoms do NOT indicate an aortic aneurysm.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
