What Causes Dizziness And Sudden Increase In Heart Rate?

Hello, I am male , 24 years old with weight-75kg and height 1.85 m. I am a bachelor student and also a part time worker. I smoke ciggarets since 2-3 years and I drink alcohol occasionally. Before couple of months I experienced high heart rate which lasted about 1-2 minutes with a feeling like I will pass out. After that it happened couple of times again and I went to my doctor. He made a cardiogram and also took blood samples. The results were all positive and he said that I am in perfect condition. His explanation was that it is because of stress. He adviced me to change my daily life etc and that the problem is in my head, nothing to worry about. I tried what he said and I was ok (didn t experience the high heart rate) but today at work it happened again. If I should explain it simply - I feel dizzy and my heart rate goes really up and I feel worried. It last usually 1-2 or 3 min. Even though it is not happening every day it still annoys me. My question is what is your opinion about that and what kind of actions should I take ? Because I am not happy with a situation where I thin everyday if it will happen again or not . I am always under stress and can not enjoy my daily life.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is good to know that your reports are normal. However, if you are having cardiac discomfort & repeated dizziness you need to get physically examined. Get lipid functions test, ECG, ECHO, treadmill exercise stress test & few more investigations done to rule out any developing pathology. Meet a Psychiatrist or a clinical Psychologist to help you cope with stress. Change of lifestyle, better diet, good sleep, exercise, staying away from addictions will help you de-stress yourself. Medications (SSRI's like Prozac, Zoloft) do help but should be taken in limited amount.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K
