What Causes Dizziness, Fainting, Nausea And Vomiting When Diagnosed With Meniere S Disease?

a friend was recently diagnosed with Meniere s disease. He is trying to handle it with diet-- watching sodium intake and drinking lots of water. Most days he is fine, but occasionally has an episode that begins with dizzyness, nausea, sometimes fainting, and today he passed out and slept for 2+ hours and upon waking had no memory of the day up till then. Am concerned that it might be more than Meniere s. He did have a brain scan when the disease was first diagnosed and it was clear. Sometimes these episodes happen out of the blue and he just faints. Other times, like today, he had a difficult time sleeping last night and felt weird upon awakening. He began vomiting around noon and has done so all afternoon.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Meniere's disease causes fine imbalance of the fluid homeostasis of the inner ear canal and cochlear apparatus passing sound waves to the brain. The alteration in the signals and fluid pressure over transient movements of the head lead to nausea, vomiting, fainting, dizziness sensation.

There are certain maneuvers as Appley`s and others, which exercises can help to keep the fluid homeostasis best way to prevent such attacks of dizziness. Though he is opting best with sodium intake and water amount, supportive medications as ondancetron, cinnarizine, betahistidine work fantastic way to help him a great deal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
