General & Family Physician, Dr. Alma Neço's Response
Hello dear, Thank you for your question.
Emergency contraception (or commonly known as morning after pill) might in some cases present side effects: nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, lower abdominal pain etc, but all of these usually fade once after 2-3 days after medication. Levonelle can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse and the efficiency tends to lower progressively within this interval. Do not forget that even though it is safe, emergency contraception does not always prevent pregnancies. That's why, as you may already have read in the leaflet, you need to take a pregnancy test two weeks after taking the pill.
I hope this helped. Best wishes, Dr. Alma
