What Causes Dizziness While Suffering From Hypertension?

I ve been experiencing light headedness for the last 1-2 months. It usually happens when I stand up but occasionally it happens at rest. I have hypertension and diabetes so when it happens I always check my blood pressure and my sugar and they are always within the normal range for me as my pressure runs a little on the high side even with medication (150 s/80 s-90 s) (10mgs Amlodipine, 100mgs Losartan, 8mgs Doxazosin). I also take vitamins (GNC Women s Ripped Vitapack, Red Yeast Rice (for cholesterol)), B-12, psych meds (Lithium 300mgs 2x/day, Lamictal 200mgs 2x/day, Geodon 120mgs), Adderall 30mgs, Clonazepam .5mgs as needed, Dexilant 60mgs, Metformin 1000mgs 2x/day, Magnesium Oxide 400mgs, Methocarbamol 500mgs (temporary), Oxycodone 10mgs 3x/day (temporary), Reglan 5mgs 2x/day (2 months on, 1 month off, this is my off month) and Probio Slim. I ve been taking all of these medications for years and have never had a problem with side effects. As I was sitting here typing this, I had a bout of light-headedness and I was sitting down although it wasn t as bad as when I stand up. I have noticed when taking my blood pressure that my heart rate has been up ranging from 94-120. I always take my blood pressure when at rest. I am a smoker and non-drinker. I don t understand the sudden onset of the light-headedness spells. Can you help me determine the root cause of my dizzy spells?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

One possibility for light-headedness would be anemia, which commonly manifests with dizziness and tiredness.

Heart rhythm and function abnormalities would also lead to insufficient blood supply to the brain and other organs so would also justify those symptoms. Another possibility would be metabolic alterations, like diabetes, altered kidney or liver function, electrolyte abnormalities. Hormonal causes like thyroid dysfunction or nutritional ones like vitamin B12 deficiencies must be considered as well. If the symptoms have appeared only very recently it might be a simple transitory viral infection which are generally transitory and need only rest and hydration. The list can go on for long, as I said those symptoms can be found in numerous conditions, only listed some of the most common ones. So I would start evaluation with some routine cheap tests to screen for anemia, infections and metabolic issues like complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, glucose, liver and kidney function, electrolyte panel, thyroid function, vitamin B12 levels, EKG.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
