What Causes Dizziness While Suffering From Mitral Valve Prolapse?
Yes. I had an echocardiogram today to check on my mitral valve prolapse which was diagnosed over 25 years ago. I’m a 69 year old female. I was told not to worry about this and not one doctor told me I needed to monitor this. Today the technician asked if I was sure I wasn’t being checked for bicuspid valve.. but then wouldn’t tell me what he meant. He should not have said anything . I looked up bicuspid valve and what I read really scared me. I have no symptoms .. I ride my bike every Saturday for 25 miles and never have had an issue. What can you tell me about this condition? Is very occasional lightheaded ness cause for concern?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In mitral incompetence, resultant pulmonary hypertension brings about breathing difficulty, less oxygenation of blood, the brain gets less oxygen, and that is why the Dizziness happens.
All the problems are well controlled with specific medicines and surgery. Please also consult a cardiologist regarding the same.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
