What Causes Drainage Of Blood Post Removal Of Ingrown Toenail?
I recently had a ingrown toenail removed. Had a post follow-up within the last month and checked out fine. Now i have flesh sticking out on top of the right side toenail. I went to clean it with peroxide and noticed a dirt, applied a little pressure to the left side of the nail and blood flowed out. Any ideas?
Since blood is coming out on application of a little pressure, there's an abscess or hematoma formed. You are suggested not to handle it by your own, you may infect the wound. Visit ER, at the earliest or arrange for a follow up clinical examination by your treating surgeon. The wound needs to be examined, drained and cleaned and antiseptic dressing done.
You may need a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and analgesics (Naproxen), one SOS when needed to ease the pain and for faster recovery. Do not wet the wound or dressing, be very careful while using restroom. Protect the wound from infection. Infection will cause worsening of the symptoms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
