What Causes Drainage Of Mucous Blood Along With Stools While On Senna?

Hi. I have been having right upper abdominal movement and pressure for about four months, Just beneath the right rib cage. It feels like I am 6-9 months pregnant and the baby is kicking me in the ribs, however, I am not pregnant and it doesn t really hurt, it is just uncomfortable. My Doctor ordered an abdominal ultrasound that was normal and suggested I try senna and gas x, especially since I was going on and iron supplement 3x per day for extremely low iron - I have celiac and endometriosis with extremely heavy periods. I have been taking the senna and gas x and iron and for about 2-3 weeks now and noticed some bloody mucous in the stool this morning. The movement in my right side has not gotten any better, and has actually become more pronounced in recent days. Should I be concerned about the blood or could it just be from the stool softeners....

Hello,

Since you are getting mucous blood with stools you are suggested to get CBC & Urinalysis (R/E & C/S) done.

Blood in stool commonly is indicative of intestinal infections, ulcerative colitis, food poisoning, crohn's disease, IBS, etc.

However, it may be indicative of serious health conditions like colon cancer. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get Imaging tests done. Get treated at the earliest, your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

In the meantime, take antacids, PPI's, take food rich in iron (green leafy veggies, liver, red meat, eggs, etc).

Take adequate water so that the electrolyte balance is not disturbed & sodium, potassium balance is well maintained in the body.

You may need a course antibiotics like Aristogyl or Norfloz TZ. For relieve from abdominal discomfort you may take spasmol (spasmoproxyvon), one sos when needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K
