What Causes Drowsiness And Incoherent Speech After Taking Valparin?

This question relates to my mother who is 72 yrs old. She has carotid artery stenosis and possibly TIA. She has been advised to take valparin. She took it for sometimes before but was all the time sleepy and was not coherent so she stopped taking the medicine. Her doctor now again has prescribed this medicine. I am worried for her - she lives on her own. Are there any other medicines that will work equally well for this condition and have lesser side effect such as drowsiness. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Valproic acid (brand name Valparin) is an anticonvulsant medication that can cause drowsiness and incoherent speech as side effects. These side effects can be more pronounced in older adults and people with a history of stroke or TIA.

It's important to consult with your mother's doctor to weigh the benefits and risks of taking Valparin and consider alternative medications that may be better suited for your mother's condition and have fewer side effects. Other anticonvulsants, such as lamotrigine or levetiracetam, may be options, but the best choice for your mother would depend on her health status and the specifics of her condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
