What Causes Dry And Sore Lips With Red Ring Around Them?

I recently started having a problem with very dry sore lips and I have a red ring around them. Chapstick, vaseline etc doesn't help at all. They are so dry it feels weird just speaking. I have never had dry lip problems in my life. Is this a sympton of something? Am I missing vital nutrients in my diet? I'm 49 and in general good health.
