What Causes Dry Cough Post Inhalation Of Cleaning Chemical Fumes?

About two weeks ago a co worker used 409 to clean a toaster, then turned te toaster on to burn off the chemical. My throat immediately started to scratch and the next day I was hoarse and coughing. After a week I went to my doctor and he confirmed my throat was irritated and gave me an inhaler. Now I m still coughing, but its moved into my chest. Can something like that cause you to developed a regular old cold?

Hello,

Symptoms point towards a chemical pneumonitis with secondary bacterial infection. It would have been if you mentioned whether the cough is with expectoration, whether the sputum is mucoid or watery. Is there any color for the sputum?

You should be started on oral antibiotics if there is cough with yellow mucoid expectoration. Take saline gargles and do deep breathing exercises. Stay hydrated and take rest. If the symptoms are not resolving then a chest X-ray needs to be taken and steroid medications have to be started.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
