What Causes Dry Mouth And Diarrhea While On Antibiotics?

hi i was prescribed clarithromycin 500mg 2 tablets at once =1000mg for a sinus infection. after 10 hours of taking it I started to be jittery. having diahrea, and very dry in mouth and headache. Cannot sleep now I checked my blood pressure which was 142/85 plus 85. I am 63 years old. Did I have a reaction to the antibiotic and is my pulse okay. IMyblood pressure is a little high. Should I not take the next dose of this antibiotic?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dry mouth and diarrhea while on antibiotics which is very common after antibiotic intake as it leads to fluid imbalance and stomach disturbances. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to

- Chew sugar free chewing gums and also suck tart candies as it will help in stimulating saliva flow and will definitely ease your symptoms.

- Drink plenty of fluids.

- Gargle with specialized mouthwashes that are formulated for dry mouth such as containing Biotene.

- Use artificial saliva drops containing methylcellulose and limit intake of coffee, tea, tobacco.

If condition doesn't get well then consult general practitioner . Doctor may prescribe alternative course of medication and can start treatment accordingly.
